PRACTICAL GOSPEL
CHRISTIANITY
Experience and live it personally! Impart it abundantly! God wants
you to live in total rightness, peace and joy. His grace is freely
given to all, but you must receive it in faith. His love for you is
so unconditional it defies understanding and comprehension. The good
news of the gospel is that God is not mad at you. If you think he
is, Paul says it’s only in your mind, and not reality (Col 1:22).
Jesus took our sin, and the wrath that was due us, and gave us his
righteousness.
Due to the finished
work of the cross of Christ, Christianity is a JOY to live, and we
are infused with God’s power if we believe his gospel and receive
the revelation of his imparted righteousness. But many Christians
live life striving, and trying to be right with God. Paul calls this
‘self righteousness,’ which only shows we are ignorant of God’s
righteousness and don’t understand the gift we have been given (Rom
10:3-4). Our identity – who we are in Christ – is all based on what
he has done, not on what we do. Jesus came to bring us God’s
revelation light, his unconditional love, and his abundant life. All
he asks is that we simply believe him and trust him.
Thus,
Jesus’ first sermon was that the Kingdom of God was here, and we
should “Repent and believe the gospel” (Mk 1:14-15). He says belief
is the ‘work’ of the Christian (John 6:29). The Old Testament
demanded what it could not produce. The cross brought reformation
(Heb 9:10), and now the New Testament produces in us what it does
not demand. No wonder Hebrews 11:40 says it’s a better deal for us.
If you’re a believer, you’re forgiven, accepted, loved, and totally
righteous in the eyes of God.
Jesus promised we’d have problems and trouble in life, but he said
to have joy, even in our problems, because he has overcome the world
(John 16:33). This is the nature of the gospel. It empowers us in
all areas of life. He says if we do things his way, -- believe and
receive his gospel -- then his way will be easy (Matt 11:28). He
says to enter his rest, not into his work. Religion demands that we
live life right, but the gospel enables us to live right – it
empowers us to live better by accident than we ever could on
purpose. This is because it is the gospel that produces good fruit
in our lives (Col 1:5-6). This fruit of the Spirit takes deep root
in us, and overflows from us to others, as God gives us everything
he has to give (Luke 12:32, 15:31). Thus Paul calls us joint, equal
heirs with Jesus himself (Rom 8:17).
